One of the 10 largest softwood lumber producers in the United States announced in 2017 it was expanding with a greenfield sawmill in the Southeast. CDG assisted Rex Lumber in selecting a site five miles north of Troy, Alabama for the location of the sawmill. Before construction of the new facility could begin, CDG performed all site work services including surveying, soil testing and site design of the 294-acre site. CDG also performed the environmental surveys and obtained environmental permits necessary to expedite the project.
Significant increases in traffic required updates to several nearby roads. Utilizing a $1 million Community Development Block Grant, five miles of U.S. 231 was resurfaced to accommodate the 140 log trucks expected to be traveling to the mill daily. A new three-lane industrial access road funded by the Alabama Industrial Access Committee and the Alabama Department of Transportation was constructed. The project also required the resurfacing of 2.5 miles of Orion Road.
The sawmill became operational in 2019, creating more than 110 jobs and producing a minimum of 240 million board feet annually.
