Rex Lumber—one of the 10 largest softwood lumber producers in the United States—announced in December 2017 it was expanding with a greenfield sawmill in the Southeast. With several potential sites for the new mill identified, CDG assisted Rex Lumber in selecting a site five miles north of Troy, Alabama for the location of the company’s third sawmill expansion in the last seventeen years. Before construction of the new facility could begin, CDG performed all site work services including surveying, soil testing and site design of the 294-acre site. CDG also performed the environmental surveys and obtained environmental permits that were necessary to expedite the project. Utilizing a $1 million Community Development Block Grant, five miles of U.S. 231 will be resurfaced to accommodate for the more than 140 log trucks expected to be traveling to and from the mill daily. The project also requires the construction of a new three-lane industrial access road funded by the Alabama Industrial Access Committee and the Alabama Department of Transportation, as well as the resurfacing of 2.5 miles of Orion Road. With operations expected to begin in June 2019, the new mill will create more than 110 jobs and produce a minimum of 240 million board feet annually.
